The Knights of Columbus Council 14360 continue to focus on a number of projects that provide great support in addressing the needs of our community. Our work may involve manual labor, and some of our social efforts focus on “dessert”. On Wednesday, January 21 the council hosted a fundraiser; “Knights Knight Out” at Peachwave Frozen Yogurt on Route 7 in Norwalk. 10% of sales was donated to the council’s scholarship fund. A great crowd braved the cold of a New England winter, to support our council, raise funds and enjoy great fresh self-serve yogurt with a myriad of toppings.
On Saturday, January 31 a core group of brother Knights rolled up their sleeves to paint rooms at Malta House; a facility that provides housing and care to unwed mothers. “We continue to do all we can for this organization whose mission is to help women & families in dire need,” said Grand Knight George Ribellino. Two bedrooms and a bathroom were repainted along with “touch- up” in other areas of the facility. A great thanks to Tim Horne, the council’s “jack of all trades”, who helped spearhead the effort.
Our council continues to active this winter. Brother Knights held another fundraising night at Saugatuck Sweets in Westport. Owned by brother Knight Al DiGuido, the sugary haven in Saugatuck has amped up the ultimate winter dessert: Warm waffles and ice cream! On Thursday, February 5 the council had another “Knights Knight Out” where 30% of sales was donated to the council’s charitable fund. “The waffles are unique and when topped with my personal favorite , Caramel Sea Salt ice cream; the dessert is divine. Special thanks to Brother Al and his wife Chris for their wonderful hospitality and of course, sweets,” said Deputy Grand Knight Scott Criscuolo. The council’s next big fundraiser is the 6th annual St. Patrick’s Day Fundraiser Dinner on Saturday, March 21 at 5:30 in St. Matthew’s Great Room. In 2000 Malta House was incorporated as an independent 501C3 charitable organization. As such, it is not part of or otherwise controlled or managed by the Order of Malta, or any of the U.S. Associations. Today the mission of Malta House benefits from financial support and volunteer efforts from a much broader community of caring supporters. We welcome your help in providing a hope for life as the Malta House family continues to grow.

Recently Council 14360 became aware of Mr. O., an elderly, homebound St. Matthew parishioner who was looking for some help. No longer able to physically handle doing the annual garden and yard work he did for years at his home, he was hoping that someone would be able to help him out.
Some members of 14360 and their families, led by A.J. Cossuto of A.J.’s Landscaping in Norwalk, responded by setting aside a Saturday morning in July to making sure the work was done at Mr. O’s house.

In what has become a tradition that all members of Council 14360 look forward to, once again many Brother Knights from St. Matthew Church (as well as their families) were pleased to help out their Pastor, Monsignor Walter Orlowski, during Holy Week of 2014. Brother Knights helped in a number of capacities throughout the week; many worked hard to keep the church clean during one of the busiest weeks of the year, while others contributed as Lectors, Ushers and Eucharistic Ministers, among other jobs.
“It is a sincere privilege to do whatever we can do during Holy Week to assist Monsignor and the people of St. Matthew Parish,” commented Grand Knight George Ribellino. “We appreciate Monsignor Walter and everything he does for our Council, and we hope to continue helping out each year during Holy Week.”

Brother Bud Taylor and a bunch of Knights from our Council painted the nursery at Malta House (a shelter for unwed mothers with children) in Norwalk on Saturday, October 26, 2013.  Lucy Freeman, the Director of Malta House, was very appreciative of our Council assisting with this project.  The money saved from not having to pay professional painters can go to other programs to assist the mothers and children.
Our Council will assist Malta House with other projects in the future.  Many thanks to Brother Bud for organizing a very rewarding project!

On September 15, 2013, a group of Knights from Council 14360 along with several of their family members were up bright and early helping set up for the annual St. Matthew Parish Picnic. Later that day, Knights assisted in taking down all of the tents, tables, etc. after the conclusion of the picnic. The weather was beautiful and the picnic that day was a huge success!

On Saturday, September 7, 2013, brother Knights George Ribellino, Scott Criscuolo, and Anthony Armentano of Council 14360 participated in the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition’s walk in East Hartford, Connecticut. The walk was held to raise funds and awareness about ovarian cancer. It was a beautiful day and a successful event, one that members of Council 14360 were happy to support.
